Position Description

We are seeking an Associate Engineer or Engineer (depending on skills and qualifications) to join the Technology team to adopt, integrate, and innovate new technologies in support of the Submarine Industrial Base (SIB). The position is responsible for supporting development and sustainment programs across the SIB. The position contributes directly to technology innovation, incubation, development and demonstration to advance current and future Advanced Manufacturing technologies. This position collaborates with multiple internal functional departments and with external suppliers and development partners to rapidly develop and demonstrate new technology concepts and materials and processing solutions that meet a broad range of customer application and technology requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, experience working with emerging technologies, and a proven track record of leading successful technology adoption and integration projects. Summary of Responsibilities

  • Independently interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate research assignments in a field or specialization of an engineering discipline.
  • Formulate and conduct research on problems of considerable scope and complexity.
  • Explore subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or series of projects of lesser scope.

Essential Functions

  • As a subject matter expert (SME), drives cross-discipline technology innovation by identifying, planning, leading, and managing design and development programs to create, evaluate, and implement new concepts or improved products or processes that have significant impact on SIB technology integration and adoption.
  • Responsible for leading and performing all aspects of development and documentation from ideation through technical feasibility, development, test, and validation.
  • Creates and manages projects that systematically evaluate potential ideas using design of experiment methodology to develop solutions that address identified trends, industry drivers, and technology gaps across the SIB.
  • Provides inputs to component and system design, assembly and operation during conceptual and preliminary design stages to ensure a system level approach is fulfilled in developing technology solutions.
  • Contributes to proposal development, technical coordination, and risk management.
  • Ensures regular communication with cross-functional engineering teams to maintain an understanding of project requirements and specifications.
  • Interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates engineering research assignments concerned with unique or controversial problems.
  • Applies diversified knowledge of engineering research principles, practices, and protocols in research projects; makes recommendations and conclusions which serve as the basis for decision making in a specialty area.
  • Formulates and conducts systematic problem analysis and resolution in an area of considerable scope and complexity through series of complete and conceptually related studies, or through a variety of projects of lesser scope.
  • Receives administrative supervision, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits.
  • Develops model concepts and approaches as an individual researcher and acts independently on technical matters.
  • Collaborates with users and principal investigators on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects; provides technical leadership and technique consultation.
  • Prepares analyses, reports, and assists with the preparation of materials for grant proposals to obtain funding in support of research activities.
  • Serves as investigator on single or multiple projects of complexity and scope consistent with above criteria, and/or manages a research unit. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  • Actively seeks out various educational and training opportunities to keep current and demonstrate continuous growth.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors’s degree in engineering, or a related field; master's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in technology leadership roles, with a focus on technology adoption, integration, and innovation.
  • Experience with EOS, GE Additive, and DED machine architectures
  • Good understanding of metallic powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition material properties commonly used within the maritime industry.
  • Experience with Directed Energy Deposition & Laser-Powder Bed Fusion metallic AM.
  • General understanding of machining and heat treatment processes.
  • Experience writing and using material and process specification documentation.
  • Ability to write and present technical reports for research studies.
  • Understanding of material and process qualification.
  • Proven track record of leading successful technology adoption and integration projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.

Salary & Benefits

Expected Salary Range $75,000-125,000 depending on role and qualifications.
